SUMMERLIN ACADEMY

In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

Objectives

The primary academic objective of the school is to introduce and instill the main teachings of Islam to our students. A structured approach will be used to teach Islam as a religion, and not as a set of cultural practices. It is expected that as students progress through the school, they will become competent in the following areas:

(a)   Faith & Worship: Articles of Faith, Five Pillars and Worship of Allah (SWT).

(b)  Islamic Morals & Manners in the light of the Qur’an & the Hadith.

(c)   Qur’anic Studies: Basic Qur’anic Teachings. Study about Qur’an - at higher levels.

(d)  Salaat: Goal is to make sure children know how to perform the Salaat before they get to an age when it becomes mandatory.

(e)   Memorization of Surahs & Duas: Memorize 5-10 Surahs (CDs are to be used for this purpose) and Duas related to Salaat and everyday affairs.

(f)     Recitation of Qur’an: The objective of the school is to introduce students to reading the Quran (not learning Arabic language). This however requires very active follow-up by parents using supplementary one on one lessons.

(g)  Sirah: Life history of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) - taught at various levels.

General Daily Schedule

School hours                 Sundays                                  11:25 am to 2:15 pm

First session                   11:30 am to 12:30 pm

Break                             12:30 pm to 1:00 pm

Second session              1:00 pm to 2:00 pm

Dhuhr prayers               2:00 pm

At each grade level, four subject areas are covered - two in the first session and two in the second session:

1.      Faith and Worship

2.      Islamic Social Studies/ Morals & Manners /Sirah and Hadith

3.      Qur’an – introduction to recitation

4.      Surah Memorization

The Islamic Studies session is divided into two parts: Faith and Worship and Islamic Social Studies/ Morals and Manners/Sirah and Hadith. Each part lasts for approximately 30 minutes.

The ‘Qur’anic Studies’ session introduces learning how to read the Qur’an, surah memorization and study teachings and meaning of the Qur’an. This period is also divided into two parts– Qur’an recitation and Surah memorization - each approximately 30 minutes long.

At the end of the first session, there is a 30-minute recess for snacks, games and socialization.

At the end of the second session students prepare for and then assemble for Dhuhr Prayers.

Curriculum Specifics

For children in lower grades (Pre-K, KG & 1st Grade), extensive hands-on activities, story-telling and play-based activities are used.

For higher grades, more emphasis is placed on Teachings/Meaning of Qur’an (as opposed to recitation) and general Islamic History (in addition to the Sirah of the Prophet - SAW).

Advanced subjects - including Science of Hadith and Islamic Akhlaq/Adab - are introduced at the Middle/High School level. Though the advanced classes use the same structured approach as the rest of school, they tend to be more discussion-oriented and deal with current events and topics of general interest to the older students
